Sacramento authorities are examining a shooting incident that took place Saturday evening at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area at the time law enforcement were shutting down a large unauthorized gathering of hundreds of attendees.
Prior to the Shooting
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were first called to the Arden-Arcade park around 6:30 in the evening after learning of persons possibly in possession of concealed weapons. Shortly after, a follow-up call was made describing a reported physical confrontation happening inside the park.
An overhead unit searched from above but reported no active disturbance. Even so, it was evident that an enormous crowd had packed into the park without any permit or approval.
The Dispersal and Shooting
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies set about removing people from the park by setting up around the park's perimeter and making announcements instructing the crowd to Howe Park Sacramento gunfire clear out. About 15 minutes were spent for attendees to disperse.
While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that 20 to 25 gunshots rang out. The barrage of gunfire sent hundreds fleeing. Deputies immediately began searching for victims.
The Shooting Victims
Altogether, four shooting victims were found to have been shot. The four individuals — a group of one female and three male victims ranging in age through their in their 20s at the time of the incident — were transported to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Medical teams indicated that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one sustained moderate wounds, and one victim's wounds were minor. Fortunately, each of the four victims was stable.
Sacramento Metro Fire assisted at the location and helped care for those with gunshot wounds at the park.
The Investigation
The bulk of the shooting was determined to have happened near Cottage Way adjacent to the Home Depot store situated at the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Investigators located additional shell casings along Cottage Way. Bullet holes were discovered in the wrought iron fence adjacent to the nearby Home Depot. These discoveries suggested that at least one of the shooters had been aiming south from Cottage Way targeting the Home Depot store. The Home Depot was put under lockdown for a period of time. Crime scene personnel continued working throughout the night.
Suspect Information
Information relayed through law enforcement radio communications indicated that a Kia was pulled over in Solano County California. Four occupants were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Sacramento law enforcement were dispatched to Solano County to transport the detainees for investigation. Video reviewed at the scene showed that two shooters had been involved.
